US scholars advocate for negotiations over tariffs

US President Donald Trump unveiled a new tariff policy on Wednesday to impose new tariffs on nearly all US trading partners, including a 34 percent levy on China. "The cost of tariffs is pushed onto the consumers," said Josef Gregory Mahoney, a professor of Politics at East China Normal University. Jake Werner, the director of the East Asia Program at the Quincy Institute, also expressed concerns about the negative impact of weaponizing tariffs, stating, "That is a very counterproductive approach."
