Lion dance gaining popularity in Kenya

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2025-04-02 15:37

With deepening exchanges between China and Africa over the years, the lion dance, a traditional Chinese dance mimicking the movement of one of Africa's most signature animals, is gaining popularity in Kenya and many African countries.

The lion dance often involves two players, one positioned in front as the lion's head and the other in the back as its body and tail. They mimic the lion moves in a lion costume accompanied by lively rhythmic drumbeats, gongs, and cymbals. It is traditionally performed during festivals such as the Spring Festival, and also on occasions such as the opening of businesses to bring good luck and fortune.
